Soi Cowboy is a small street about 200m long located close to the intersection of Sukhumvit Road and Asoke Road. It is just about 100 meters from the intersection and connects Asoke Road with Soi 23 Sukhumvit, running parallel to Sukhumvit Road. It is right next to the subway station exit.
It has a nice selection of bars, pool bars, and gogo bars. There are about 40 small and bigger bars, located on both sides. Famous bars include Long Gun, Tilac, both close to Asoke Road.
On the other side, close to Soi 23, we find Baccara, Midnite bar, Our Place, (and Dollhouse) In between them, a vast array of smaller bars.

Bar Reviews |
AFTERSKOOL
Afterskool is one of the smaller bars of Soi Cowboy. It is located about in the middle of the Soi on the left side if you enter from Asoke road.
There are many smaller bars in Soi Cowboy. I visit some of them from time to time. But Afterskool is the only one I visit more regularly.
The bar has a small dancing stage, with room for two girls to dance. The girls wear a kind of 'school girl' outfit, not very revealing though. If they are not familiar with you, the girls can be quite aggressive when you enter the bar for the first time. It is not uncommon to find yourself surrounding by about 6-10 girls, all trying to get our attention and a lady drink. By the way, drinks are cheap in this bar, with beer priced at 70 baht.
This bars is one of those that have a 'naughty boy' corner. At the far end of the bar, customers who need some 'hand massage', are sometimes serviced by the girls, who usually work in pairs to do this job. Reportedly, customers have been serviced like this right in the middle of the bar, but it must be said, that the girls seem to have some capability in 'protecting the privacy' of their customers.

APACHE BAR
Apache bar (in the good tradition of 'cowboy' related names for the bars) has been around as long as I can remember. It is one of the smaller bars on the left when entering Soi Cowboy from Asoke road. It was one of these rather quiet places where a few girls would be dancing on a small stage, and people could spend some time having a good chat with friends.
The bar has a new owner (same as Suzie Wong and Sheba's). The interior has been renovated and the bar has been moved upmarket.
The big innovation (we think it will be replicated in due time in other bars) is 'table dancing'. There is a standard longitudinal dancing stage on the right with some bar stools. On the left are 4 semicircular sofas placed along the wall. Each sofa is surrounding a round table on which one girl will be dancing. Girls in the bar are wearing 'Apache skirts'. Apache girls do not wear tops of course. Furthermore, we do not know if this is historically correct, but the Apache girls in this bar do not wear underwear either. Furthermore, we have to point out that the table tops are covered by a mirror, to improve visual reconnaissance.
The floor of the larger dancing floor is also covered by a mirror (the girls dance barefoot, which we think is cute). As an expert in this matter, we would like to point out to bar owners and managers that one of the best places to put mirror reflections is ON THE COUNTER surrounding the dancing stage (provided it is at about the same height as the dancing floor itself). Putting a mirror on the dancing floor often results in customers having to take unnatural positions to have the best views. For a preview of mirrors on the counter, one should go to Buttoms Up at Nana Plaza. We are quite puzzled that this innovations at Buttoms Up has not yet been replicated at other bars.
Apache is still a small bar of course, but it has found an interesting way of displaying its girls. Prices of drinks are high for a small bar at 120 baht for a beer.

BACCARA
Baccara is a relatively new bar in Soi Cowboy. It opened about three years ago at the place of another entertainment area, called Blue Bird. Blue Bird used to be a place where customers could dance with girls, but was never very successful.
The bar layout of Baccara is definitively one of the best in town, and has up to now as far as I know, not yet been copied successfully. The bar has two floors. The ground floor has a 'classic', well lit dancing stage. The girls dancing there wear a regular bikini outfit. On the second floor, girls wearing 'schoolgirl' outfit, dance on a transparent floor. Most of these girls will dance without panties and some girls also are topless. So it a common site to see the customers below extend their necks to get a view of the 'interesting' parts. The girls dancing on the second floor tend to be rather young. Some of them probably look young because of the outfit they are wearing. If you want to spare your neck, you can make use of the multiple mirrors below (like on the counter bar around the stage) and that way also get a quite suitable view.
Recently, the girls downstairs have also done away with their knickers. There are mirrors on the dancing floor and on the bar counter. For quite a while these were very useful. However, over the last year or so, the reflections of the mirrors have deteriorated. Time for some renovation, I should think.
As mentioned, the outlay of the bar is second to none. There are about 30 girls working. Despite some drawbacks (high noise levels and high prices), the bar is often packed with visitors.
This bar is much frequented by Japanese customers, who fancy the transparent ceiling. I am told this kind of bar is also not uncommon in Japan. As a result of having many Japanese customers though, some of the girls have become quite choosy, neglecting the 'farang' customers, since most of them offer less money for activities than their Japanese counterparts.
Baccara has upped its prices recently. Beers and standard short drinks cost 130 baht, the highest price level you will see in Soi Cowboy, and actually also more expensive than beers at any Nana Plaza bar (or Patpong bar for that matter).
As in most bars, you can now also get bottled water as a drink, but Baccara is the only bar we know that uses really small water bottles (I guess they must be used by certain airlines).
One final comment : Excessive noise levels at times in this bar. To be avoided for frequent visits if you value your hearing capabilities. One solution is to escape to the second floor, where the music is bearable.

BLACK & WHITE
Black & White bar is located right in the middle of Soi Cowboy, on the left side if entering from Asoke Road. It is a mid sized bar. Nothing extraordinary about this mid-sized bar. Maybe not exactly the first bar to visit at Soi Cowboy, but a good alternative if you have been in the more busy places already. Having said that, Black & White is actually more busy than it was awhile ago. They have quite a few attractive girls. The atmosphere is relaxed, but occasionally, as in most other bars, it can get wild, usually when some of the girls have had a few drinks.
A really good thing at this bar is that there are more than the usual two shifts of girls dancing. There are actually 4 shifts on most occasions. This gives the girls ample time to walk around and interact with customers. Much less chance that the girls you bought a drink for, will disappear to go on stage right away in this bar.
The bar is part of the Tilac group of bars, so drink prices are the same as in Tilac bar.

CACTUS CLUB
The bar is located on the right when entering from Asoke Road.
The bar is an affiliate of Long Gun. It is a small bar (width of one 'townhouse') and features a longitudinal dance stage in the middle with bar stools on the left, and bar stools and a row of seats on the right. Room for about 5-6 girls on stage, and 20-25 customers. Sitting on the bar stools on the left can be a little bit of a nuisance, since some people seem to want to move around a lot, making it necessary to frequently adjust your position to let them pass by.
Being affiliated with Long Gun, it features similar sexotic shows, and the girls performing the shows are definitively more attractive than average. In between a lot of naked dancing (not every day, and depending on certain conditions, such as surveillance), but the quality of the girls could be better. Of course, things can change for the better quite fast, so do not be deterred by my observation of the moment.
Interestingly, the bar reminds me of Long Gun when it had a similar size and outlay, about 10 years ago. Long Gun has now expanded and is still the most popular bar at Soi Cowboy. So maybe Cactus Club also has a good future.

COWBOY ONE/TWO
Let us start with Cowboy Two first. The new relatively big bar opened in the beginning of 2003. It has kind of impressing (that is, large) neon lighting outside. Inside the layout is kind of unusual. Close to the entrance is the cashier counter, and just behind a square dancing floor, accommodating about 8 dancers. The seating consists of cubicles around a table, both along the left and right of the bar. Behind the dancing stage there are 3 rooms of sofa's. One gets the impression of entering into some kind of restaurant or theatre. While having opened quite a while now, the bar has not been having much success yet. When I visited last time, the format was naked dancing by most of the girls (yes, yet another bar at Soi Cowboy), with some attractive girls present. I visited on a saturday night, still I estimate less than 10 customers where present in this large bar. I think possibly because the outlay of the bar does appear awkward. On top of that, prices are the highest at Soi Cowboy, with beer and most liquor at 110 bath a drink.
Soi Cowboy One (same management) has been around for quite a few years now. It is a smaller bar (one 'townhouse' wide) with several smallish dancing stages along the left wall when entering. The seating is along the right wall or at the cashier counter at the entrance. I have no recent information right now. Last time I visited the place had not many dancers and no customers, so I did not actually enter the place. Since it has the same management, prices at Soi Cowboy One are likely to be the same as at Soi Cowboy Two. Lady drinks are 120 baht in this bar, which is just ridiculous.

DEJA VU
Deja Vu bar opened at the beginning of June 2005. Unfortunately, the bar owners did not follow all the existing rules, and the bar was closed down by authorities for a long period of about two months. It then reopened but was closed again thereafter. Not sure what that was all about.
Anyway, the bar is open and running now. It is a new bar, so the layout if flashy and attractive, also on the outside. There is a long longitudinal dancing stage in the middle of the bar, with barstools around and sofas on both sides.
When we visited lately, the format is mostly girls dancing completely in the nude, a few of them attractive. The girls come on stage one by one (changing with each song), which is the old format (instead of changing as a group) and the one we like the most. At least the girls move along on the dancing stage, and you do not get to look for 20 minutes at the same girl in front of you (one that may not be that good looking) as in most other bars.
There is a glass ceiling to the right of the bar, with sometimes some girls dancing on top of it.
Interesting is that Deja Vu has 'happy hours' when you arrive before 8.30 P.M. So when you come early (and quite a few customers have picked up on this) you get most drinks for 60 baht.
We think this bar has good further potential, provided it does not close anymore for whatever reasons.

DOLLHOUSE
From its opening day in February 2002, Dollhouse has been a great success and added another boost to Soi Cowboy nightlife. There is a central moderately large 'classic' dancing stage, with barstools around. In addition, the bar features a second floor section (actually 'mezzanine' floor), from where you can look down on the girls below. The second floor has two small dancing areas, where sometimes girls are dancing. One of these dancing stages has a transparent floor section. However, we have to say that after just two years in use, the glass ceiling has become rather 'untransparent', wrong kind of glass we presume.
Downstairs the girls usually wear transparent garments without underwear and little protection from viewers. They will occasionally gyrate into appropriate positions, for you to evaluate what is on offer.
On or last visits, we came to realize there are very few girls coming 'straight from the farm' here. That is, most girls are well into their twenties, and seem to be more 'professional' than what is on offer in some other bars. This can have benefits for customers, but not for those who prefer a shy, unexperienced girl that just started working.
The bar features a large television screen, showing soccer games, MTV (without sound of course) and the like.
The bar management has a way of making customers pay for some more entertainment, by offering 'ping-pong' balls at 20 baht a piece. The idea is that you throw them on stage, so the girls dive to catch them. We understand they get 15 baht for each ball they can catch, 5 baht goes to the bar. Quite a few customers go for this (in our opinion) little scam, and throw hundreds of baht into the air that way. Hopefully, they can avoid living on social security in their latter years. We are not sure, you can see this kind of 'game' also in some other bars, but maybe Dollhouse was the one to introduce it.
A very interesting feature is that Dollhouse has 'happy hour' if you arrive before 8.30 P.M. Most drinks are available at just 50 baht, which is a very good deal. |
FIVE STARS
Five Stars is located close to the entrance on the left side, when entering Soi Cowboy from Asoke Road. This bar has been around for a while.
Five Stars is not like any other a go go at Soi Cowboy, since besides gogo dancing it features a live band, that seems to be playing most of the evening and night. The bar is small (one 'townhouse' width) and did not change much over the years. The live music seems to be mainly rock and roll from the 60's and 70's. When I last visited, there was actually a 'farang' lead singer. The music isn't too loud, and altogether quite enjoyable.
The girls themselves dancing on the stage (about 5 girls at a time) do the classic Bangkok shuffle, seem a little bit bored at times, and even squat down in between the songs. However, most of them seem to prettier than your average Soi Cowboy bar girl. Not too many girls here past multiple pregnancies, or overly obese. The atmosphere in the bar is altogether rather good. Drink prices are quite acceptable, beer at 90 baht, soft drinks at 70 baht (ladies drinks 80 baht). The bar fine at Five Stars is 400 baht, lower than in most other bars (admittedly bigger bars).

LONG GUN (LUCKY STAR)
Latest : Long Gun has always been a 'leading' bar. As such the bar has reengaged in showing nudity again at Soi Cowboy, both in its shows, and with the girls dancing on stage the regular way. It is always difficult to get into the bar, but worth a try. Negative : Very loud music.
Long Gun is the success story of Soi Cowboy. It has been doing well and making customers happy for years on end now. While being a relatively small bar, it is one of the drawing magnets of Soi Cowboy.
Lucky Star ( Long Gun) has a lot of shows on offer. The last year or so, there seem to be no practical objections against nudity at Soi Cowboy, so the shows again have become often explict. As in AfterWitch (at Nana Plaza) there are some somewhat capable 'choreographers' behind the scenes. The shows can be entertaining, but of course can become a bit tedious after you have seen them many times. The shows on offer are very entertaining, and we second best in Bangkok, after the ones on offer at Angel Witch (Nana Plaza).
An important problem at Long Gun is how to get into the bar. It is usually packed full with people, especially during the weekend days.
This is also one of the few bars (maybe the only at Soi Cowboy?) with three shifts of girls dancing. This implies actually that lots of girls are present. When also taking into account the shows, it means many girls have a lot of 'free time' at hand, and will be looking for customers for a drink or more. While it is customary in other bars for the girls to slip away after sitting with you for just 5 or 10 minutes (they have to go dancing ; if there are only two shifts, as in most bars, that means every 15 minutes they have to be on stage), in Long Gun they may stay with you for a 'long time' provided you buy them a drink after a while. This has an advantage in that you are more able to have a talk, and see what kind of attitude and character the girl has before you decide to buy her out for the night. Since the girls have more 'free time' on hand, they seem to like to linger around with the customers.
This bar has been and remains the number one bar to check out in Soi Cowboy.
The lavatories are a little bit off-putting though.

MIDNITE BAR
Latest : Midnite bar under new ownership has been refurbished, and looks quite better now, especially on the outside. The bar maintains its 'dark' look and somewhat seedy aspect. The girls are the same as before, and sometimes are in birthday suit. One negative point : overly loud music!
Midnite bar has a long history. Being a quite successful bar many years ago, it slumped into a years long period of poor business and lack of customers. For the old hands, the cashier counter, that was in front of the dancing stage, has been moved all the way back, and barstools surround the whole stage area.
What you will see at Midnite is a spectacle to behold. Hands down this bar has the plainly most ugly girls in Soi Cowboy (and this includes the girls at Our Place). For a while the girls were covered up, but for more than a year now they dance again mostly in the nude.

OUR PLACE
Our Place is one of the bars at Soi Cowboy that seems to have been there forever. And in this case with the same management for, I guess, at least about 10 years. The place has not changed much over the years.
Now this bar is the place to go, if you want ot see the effects of aging, pregnancy and food on the average Thai girl. From looking around the bar, it seems only a certain clientele seems to be able to cope with what is on display : mostly German (speaking), overweight or bald. And you can get all this for the price of a beer that is as expensive as in places where the girls are much more interesting and/or more classy.
If you are somewhat tired of looking at the girls, we recommend the TV, mounted in one of the corners of the bar. It invariably seems to show National Geographic or Discovery Channel. Some of the animals shown there do not look that bad at all by comparison.
The girls (women) at Our Place come up on stage one by one, not 'en masse' as in most of the other bars. They do dance for a long time, and will go from one end of the stage to the other end in the process. So you don't get to look at the same girls for 20 minutes, as in other bars. An advantage is that when you accost a girl, she is not likely to run away soon after you order her a drink, since the girls have ample time in between going on stage.
Our Place is very well located at the entrance of soi Cowboy when entering from soi 23 (where most taxis will bring you if you head for the soi). When wandering around there, getting out of your taxi, do mind the katoeys (lady boys) who are doing some trade there at the corner of soi Cowboy- soi 23.
If you want to see something completely different and a different type of bargirls, we suggest that after visiting Our Place you go to Baccara or Shark just closeby on the other side.
What is mentioned above, may deter some people from entering. However, we all need to take in different types of experiences. After all, we sometimes feel like eating just bread and jam, instead of lobster. On top of that, there are hardly any bars that do not have any girls that do escape the rule. As such, Our Place also has two or three attractive girls, you just may have to wait a bit to see them on stage. And since most of the customers seem to be mesmerized by the oversized buttocks on stage, you may be able to find someone more appealing.
By the way, Our Place has some good tasting wheat bear. Somewhat pricey, but you get larger volume to consume.

RAWHIDE
Rawhide is the first bar on the right if you enter Soi Cowboy from Asoke road. It is the sister bar of Long Gun. For a long while, the bar was not as successful (mostly to do we think with the outlay of the bar), but lately there are many more customers.
The bar has a lot of shows on offer nowadays. The girls doing the (what is actually called that way) 'sexy show', are very attractive. More boring (but entertaining if you have never seen it) are the painting show, the shooting balloon show, the candle blowing show etc. The latter shows are usually performed by girls who have a particular capability with their sexual organ, but these girls are not really exactly the better looking ones. It has to be said that the regular dancers at Rawhide are young (but not too young) and some are really very attractive, while on top of that still very shy.
Dancing is mostly in the nude, or with some very revealing outfit.
So, if you can not get into Long Gun, Rawhide may be a good alternative. Actually we prefer Rawhide nowadays, since it is almost always possible to find a spot, close to the stage (that is where you want to be).
A negative is that the sound system is really blasting very loud music. The best place to go (the speaker on that site is smaller) is to the right when entering the bar.

SHADOW BAR
Shadowbar has been renovated about a year ago, and is now also part of the Tilac group of bars. The entrance is somewhat impressive. The bar is not big and longitudinal in shape. On one side, comfortable sofas for the customers, on the other side, a dancing stage with room for 5-6 girls, not just 2, as is the case of some of the other small bars. In between the seating area and the stage, is a long barcounter with barstools. Some girls actually also dance on part of the barcounter.
The bar seems to have a faithful crowd. Good atmosphere. As in the other bars of the Tilac bar, there are no shows, and the girls are modest.

SHARK BAR
Shark bar opened mid september 2002 on the location of the former unsuccessful Juke's bar.
The bar has been completely remodeled and features two floors. The ground floor has a classic a go go bar outlay, with an central longitudinal dancing stage, with room for about 10 dancers. Fixed (unfortunately) barstools on both sides of the stage, and two rows of sofas on both sides.
The ceiling has a transparent part, about 2 by 5 meters, allowing for a view of the girls dancing upstairs. This transparent part is located somewhat to the right of the bar when entering, so better to sit on that side, if you want to enjoy the view. Nowadays however there are rarely girls dancing upstairs.
From the beginning there were a sufficient number of girls dancing at Shark, and I noticed some that had moved from other bars in the Soi. In our opinion, the girls are looking better than average in this bar.
The girls do not dance in the nude here.
There is a pool table upstairs.
Drink prices are average, that is 110 baht for a beer or a short drink.
A negative in this bar, is that the shifts of the girls dancing are rather short. So if you buy a lady drink, chances are the girl of your choice may disappear within minutes to go dancing. Not really a good idea from the bar management.
Lavatories are up to standard.

SHEBA'S BAR
Latest : Nude shows (of the lesbian show variety) and topless dancing seem to prevail nowadays, though not on all days. Member only club according to notice outside the bar (hopefully you know the meaning of this, no problem for Caucasians and Japanese to get in)
Sheba's bar is a recent addition to the nightlife entertainment scene at Soi Cowboy. It is located somewhat past the middle of the soi when you enter from Asoke Road, on the left side. About opposite of the bar is Suzie Wong bar, operated by the same management (as is Playskool at Nana Plaza). The bar is quite ostentatious on the outside. Above the entrance, an Egyptian face is 'sculptured, with some columns next to the entrance etc. The hello-girls outside are dressed up as Egyptian ladies, I guess as depicted in the 'Cleopatra' movie some decades ago. The bar is rather big and has two levels. The central part of the ceiling is open, with some transparent parts (as most new bars now seem to have) on both sides. The girls can get down from the upper level by using some ropes. Some of the girls are dancing in the nude, and shows are featured on most days. About 8-10 girls are dancing at the ground floor level, on the upper level there is room for 4 girls. Unfortunately, during my few visits to Sheba's I was not impressed by the quality of the girls on offer. Actually Suzie Wong on the other side of the street, has much more to offer. Admittedly, things can change from one week to the other.
Sheba's and its bit sister bar Suzie Wong are the most expensive bars on Soi Cowboy (and more expensive than the bars at Nana Plaza for that matter).

SPICE GIRLS
Latest : Occasional nude dancing on the top floor. Bar has a modest amount of girls, but some cuties.
Spice Girls bar in the middle of Soi Cowboy is a recent addition. It is located in between Cowboy One and Cowboy Two, and if we remember well, it has taken the place of a 'mom-and-pap' grocery store once located there.
One could say Spice Girls bar is a fair copy of Baccara bar at a smaller scale. The bar is longitudinal (one shophouse width) with the dancing stage at one side, and sofa seating area at the opposite site. About 5 girls are dancing downstairs on stage (with one more girl actually dancing on the bar counter). Looking up, there is a transparent glass ceiling with two or three girls dancing upstairs. A pool table is also located upstairs.
The dress code of the girls varies. Some dance in standard bikini outfit. The girls on the second floor often dance completely in the nude. There are not many girls here (between 10 and 15) but some are quite attractive.
The bar is off to a good start with ample customers. While there are not really many girls working here, some are really cute and good looking. Bar prices are standard, thus somewhat overpriced, at 110 baht for a beer. However, for quite a while now there is draft Tiger beer on offer at 70 baht. There is however a happy hour if you arrive before 8.30 P.M. when you can get most drinks at 60 baht. The bar overall has a good atmosphere and the girls working there seem to have fun doing so.
The lavatories seem to invite 'intimacy' with pink lightning all over the place. Difficult to see what your are doing though.

SUZIE WONG

Suzie Wong seems to have developed in one of the most busy bars at Soi Cowboy. We visited one monday night and the place was quite full (on what usually is a quiet day for bars). They seem to have ample supply of girls on stage. We are not sure if this is part of the attraction, but Suzie Wong is one of a few (the only?) bars at Soi Cowboy to employ katoeys as serving staff. Often nude shows of the lesbian variety are offered. There is not much subtlety involved, just spread open activity. Possibly any additional fines that have to be paid for breaking the law are covered by recent price hikes.
Suzie Wong is located in the middle of Soi Cowboy on the right side when entering from Asoke road. It is directly opposite to the Dollhouse bar.
Suzie Wong has been around for ages at the present location, but we can speak of a relatively new bar, since management and layout of the bar have been substantially altered after reopening in 2002. It was a very successful bar years ago, but the present change is quite welcome, since over the last few years it had clearly deteriorated into a dump. The present managers/owners are the same people that run Playskool bar at Nana Plaza and Sheba's at Soi Cowboy.
So, Suzie Wong has been remodelled. There is a central longitudinal stage as before, with barstools around, and two rows of sofas on both sides. The barstools are not moveable, which is somewhat uncomfortable, and I noticed people somewhat avoiding sitting on them, possibly trying to avoid bodily contact with other customers.
Unfortunately, the management of Suzie Wong found it opportune to raise prices recently to the highest on Soi Cowboy. You can now have a beer or short drink at 130 baht.
When walking out, watch out not to bump into the wooden doors, that for some reason are carefully watched, and tend to be closed hidden behind a curtain. |
TILAC BAR
Tip : Order a bottle of water together with another drink. The water is pretty cheap here at 30 baht (last time we asked for one), and will allow you to stay longer in the bar, and mitigate the effect of too much alcohol.
Tilac is one of the largest bars in Soi Cowboy. It is located on the left side of the Soi, when entering from Asoke Road. The bar has been around for many years and consistently being successful, although not busy every night. The bar has not changed in a long time, and people who did not visit in many years, will still be familiar with the surroundings when they enter. The only recent addition is a small outside beer bar area, where you can be served less generally available beers like wheatbeer and dark beers. The bar is reportedly favored by long-time residents, many of them who have seen it all a long time ago, and do not necessarily need all naked women to be around, while sipping their beers.
So, indeed, this bar does not offer shows, although occasionally they have experimented with 'painting' shows. The girls wear bikini outfit. Not many real young girls around at present, most women working there in their mid-twenties.
There are actually two dancing stages, so the best place to sit and see them all at all times, is to be seated in the middle of the bar, between the two dancing stages.
