Chiang Mai Bars

There are beer bars everywhere in Thailand, so Chiang Mai is no exception. There are discos, karaoke bars, and live music venues everywhere.

The busiest and most popular nightlife areas are near the Tapae Gate, Loi Kroh Road (know as Chiang Mai's Pink Light district) and on the Charoenrat Road next to the eastern bank of the Ping River. Here you can find the hangouts of the local expats, who can always give you a few friendly tips, there are also a few go-go bars and sports bars. Most have pool tables and a small selection of hostesses. Most fo the bars play an assortment of music videos or various TV sports programs.

There are also an assortment of beer bars in the middle of the Night Bazaar, in the Chiang Mai Entertainment Complex. The complex is located very close to the Pizza Hut on Chang Klan Road. If you walk directly from the Night Bazaar down Loy Kroh Road heading towards the old canal, you will find some small bars that are frequented by backpackers and when you get to the intersection at Khotchasan Road, there are also small selction of bars.

Chiang Mai University & Nimmanheimin Road Area

West of the city center, the area around Nimmanhaemin Road is a very popular hangout for younger Thais, mainly due to it being located so close to Chiang Mai University. The pubs, as they are called here, are a mix between bar, restaurant and nightclub, and each having loud music interspersed with live bands fronted by musicians who are most likely hitting the books in the daytime (Some are good some are very bad!!). Tourists looking for something a bit more happening are better off staying in the east side of town. But to be honest it's great to mix with the local Thai students.

Go Go Bars
If you are coming to Chiang Mai it is probably to get away from it all and to try and get out into the country a little bit. Chiang Mai has a couple of Go Go Bars and they are a pretty tame affair compared with some of the other parts of Thailand. The women are either older or they are young, tall, with white skin and have very tiny bodies (the way Thai Men like them). There is an older Go Go Bar now called the Starlight is located along the old canal near the intersection of Khotchasan Road with Loy Kroh Road. Not too far from the Night Bazaar. Right in the heart of the Night Bazaar, behind Chiang Inn Plaza is a newer Go Go Bar called the Foxy Lady.

Gay and Lesbian

Suggested popular gay-friendly bars in Chiang Mai include: Coffee Boy Bar (Thanon Tung Hotel), Circle Pub (Erawan lnn) and Adam's Apple (both on Chotana rd), and Doi boy (near Novotel Hotel), each featuring live cabaret shows. There are also a number of gay go-go bars behind the Night Bazaar. The lesbian scene is far quieter and the only magnet is Femme Fatale (located at Chiang Mai Land, south of the city off Chang Klan rd).

Thailand's cross-gender extravaganza

Simon Caberet is uniquely Thai. Only here can you experience an evening of beautifully slender bodies, exquisite faces, colourful costume and unmisstakeable flambouyancy from an all male cast of ladyboys, gay actors and transsexuals. Whether you're straight or gay, this outrageous permanent performance, which also has a show in Phuket, is a worthwhile evening's entertainment.
